9.4.18 - Goin' west - prologue
When you are out on a 2000 mile motorcycle ride off the beaten path, in the dry conditions of the west, the chances of making it out without at least one lung full of dirt and lots of black boogers is pretty slim. In fact just saying there is a slim chance is probably a lie...
So why do we do it? why did we do it? These are questions I will try and answer in the next blog. For me the thought of loading our bikes down with a weeks worth of sleeping arrangements, clothing, and some other essential gear is too hard to pass up. There is something that happens when you are out on an "adventure" like this, it changes you. It changes the way you see the world, and way we exist in it. Sometimes shutting off the reality of the world that most of us don't want to be in can be pretty tough.
For most they just don't have the means to do it, or the will to rather... It's a comfortable world out there and to most the thought of sleeping in a tent out in the elements on questionable Amazon inflatable sleeping pads, worn out sleeping bags, eating camping meals and then relying on a campfire to stay warm until its time to curl up in your tent doesn't sound like fun to most. Let alone a getaway.... BUT...
Its not for everyone, but this looks like paradise to me.
to the ones who choose this lifestyle there is nothing better. Sure its little cold, and the ground is a little uneven, but the fact that I can see every star in the sky, I can feel the winds change, I wake up to the world, rather then in it. It forces you to have to rely on yourself. Finding camp, navigating, being at the mercy of Mother Nature unlocks something primal inside me and I feel the most at home I ever have.
This trip tested all the elements that she (Mother Nature) had to throw at us. From being chased by rain most of the trip, High temperatures with no escape from the sun, knock you over winds straight into riding in 45 degree weather while it rained and sleet while trying to make sense of a trail that just vanished into nothing. This one was for the ages.
I'll try and wrap my mind around everything that occurred over the week and form it into some words that will make sense to those who weren't there. stay tuned!
I was happy to have Chris as company on this trip. It was his first time riding out here in the west, and I'm almost positive not his last.
